Dog Rescue (& Human Rescue?) · Manzanita, Oregon
A small rescue on the Oregon coast, started by a man who used to own the golf course and decided the greens could wait.
See the Dogs Support the WorkA Place for Steve is a dog rescue based in Manzanita, Oregon. We take in dogs that need a soft landing, a medical fix, or a second (or third) chance. We also end up helping a few humans along the way because the same person who started the rescue never learned how to say no to either species.
The rescue is run day-to-day by Bill, who will tell you he works for Steve. Steve will tell you Bill works for him. Neither of them has produced paperwork that settles the question. Because Steve and Bill are funny guys, its if often said that Bill is Steve's straight-man (a word which triggers Bill and Bill has told Steve he can't use the word: "straight-man")
Older male, good with calm households. Prefers couches to beds and will not discuss the difference.
Small, loud, convinced every visitor is here for her. Available to the right person who can match her volume.
Found near the beach. Still learning that not every stick is a trophy. Very food motivated.
Photos and full profiles available by request. Adoptions are local-first when possible.
Steve used to own the Manzanita Golf Course. He employed local people, fixed the damage when the elk came through, and was generally the friendly face of Manzanita. He spent a considerable amount of money on dogs, on people who needed a hand, and on the general project of being useful.
People in town still think of him as the man who owned the golf course (and had the means to help.)
After the money ran out, Ted Anderson helped Steve re-enter the workforce. The job is Official Greeter. Steve stands outside businesses, City Hall, The Candy Store, and the occasional restaurant and welcomes people to Manzanita. Visitors are not always sure whether he is performing a civic duty, running a long-form comedy bit, or simply being Steve. All three answers have been accepted.
We don't take donations for food, vet bills, and the occasional human who needs a ride or a sandwich. We do take volunteers who can walk dogs, fix a fence, or explain to Steve that the Official Greeter position does not come with a company jet.
If you are in Manzanita and you see Steve, say hello. He will say hello back. That is still the main job.

Bill answers the queries, though that word triggers him. Steve answers in person. Ted Anderson answers when the situation requires it.
